Rasp fern

Doodia media

Doodia australis

Pukupuku

Tufted ground fern with older fronds having a scratchy/raspy feel to them. Although this picture shows the fern as being pretty, for some of the year it is a more even green. This fern produces hormones which mimic the hormones that control the development of insects. As well the pink tinge of the young fronds indicates that the fern contains chemicals which protect from sunburn. (A Crowe)
